Sports have always been regarded as the catalyst in the reduction of criminal activity and administrators in Berbice have decided to focus on such activities if only to preserve the involvement of youths in criminal activities.
Towards this end, another boxing gym was constructed in the Ancient County of Berbice to compliment the recently inaugurated Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG).
The ancient county of Berbice, known more for its production of top class cricketers, has recently seen a heavy concentration of boxing.
Following the installment of the PRBG, the coach Orlan Rogers, in association with Sanjay Jewelry, New Amsterdam Market, hosted the inaugural Pro/Am boxing card.
The promoters were a mite disappointed with the level of support rendered by the business community as well as the fans yet they are cognizant of the fact that they will have to persevere if only for the sake of the youths of Berbice.
Recently, former professional boxing champion, Jeff Roberts, now back home from the USA, teamed up with a group of enthusiasts to form another boxing gym in the Ancient County.
Despite the obvious challenges faced in the installment of the gym as well as the attempt to sell the message to the Berbicians that the involvement of young people in sports can serve as the catalyst to crime free lives, the promoters have complained that the task seems Herculean.
Notwithstanding this, these boxing fanatics continue to persevere hoping that one day the situation would change for the better.
The new boxing gym, dubbed the Central New Amsterdam Boxing Gym, is strategically situated in the Central Police Station compound and offers training sessions in the afternoons after school would have recessed.
Following successful elections, Mr. Abid Ali was installed as the President of the institution.
Mr. Monty Bovell serves in the double capacity of Treasurer as well as coach while Desmond Kelly and Aubrey Cadogan are the other two appointed coaches. Ms. Yaffanne is the secretary of the gym.
Twenty-five eager youths ranging between the ages of 14-19 have signed up for membership and the management has revealed that the numbers are growing on a daily basis.
Jeff Roberts has volunteered his services towards the development of the members of the gym.
He said that he is well aware of the challenges faced by young people as they attempt to assert themselves in the society.
He is also cognizant of the distractions that can lead them along a different path so he is bent on lending himself to the developmental programme.
Roberts said that most of the youngsters that utilize the facility are from poor homes. Towards this end, the executives are discussing ways of alleviating the suffering of these youths. Roberts said that plans are in train to provide a hot meal for the youths as well as to initiate an educational programme for them.
He said that he has spoken with the President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing association, PS Steve Ninvalle who visited the area recently. Mr. Ninvalle has since promised to render assistance.
The name Jeff Roberts is synonymous with boxing and many an ardent boxing fan would vividly remember his epic battle with former Continental of Americas welterweight champion, Michael Benjamin in 1987 for the local lightweight title.
Roberts migrated to the USA and later hung up his gloves. He is now an elected Vice President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA).
