– widow reportedly receives $500,000 from boat owner
Guyanese boat captain Vasdeo Persaud, who reportedly drowned when his vessel was attacked by pirates last Thursday, was buried in Venezuela yesterday.
Deodat Bissoon, who owns the ill-fated fishing vessel ‘Sudesh’, told Kaieteur News that Persaud’s relatives were unable to travel to Venezuela to witness the burial.
He had explained on Monday that the remains were too decomposed to be brought back to Guyana.
Asked about compensation for the dead man’s family, Mr. Bissoon stated that he gave Persaud’s widow $500,000. The 39-year-old victim is survived by his wife and two sons, aged 15 and 11.
It was Persaud’s first trip on Bissoon’s vessel.
Meanwhile, Bissoon said that Venezuelan authorities have not located his boat and are still hunting for the attackers.
Persaud’s badly decomposed body was found on Monday afternoon on a beach in Venezuela, reportedly in an area known as Kamarito.
Mr. Bissoon said that from reports he received, Persaud’s body bore no marks of violence.
Persaud, of Parika Façade, East Bank Essequibo, is believed to have drowned when he and his three-man crew jumped overboard after pirates torched their fishing vessel. According to reports, Persaud and three crewmen, identified as ‘Pepe’, ‘Keelman’ and a third man, were fishing in Venezuelan waters at around 11:00 hrs on Thursday, when a vessel manned by four pirates, brandishing firearms, approached the ‘Sudesh’.
The pirates sprayed fuel on the vessel and set it alight, causing some of the crew to sustain burns on their feet. The victims jumped overboard and began to swim towards a buoy located about a mile and a half away. However, the tide was reportedly strong and only ‘Pepe’, ‘Keelman’ and the third crewman managed to reach the buoy.
Mr. Bissoon said that he was told that the men heard Persaud shout for help before disappearing in the river.
Although they had sustained burns, the men clung to the buoy for hours until they were rescued by a Venezuelan vessel and taken to a hospital.
The fisherman known as ‘Pepe’, who sustained the most injury of the trio, was admitted.
