Once again another set of local athletes have performed outstandingly at an international competition thus reinforcing the views of many that sport remains the main conduit that could give this ‘Land of many Waters’ the kind of positive promotion it sorely needs right now.
Local powerlifters, arguably among the strongest humans in Guyana has just concluded a historic showing at the 4th IPF / NAPF Caribbean Islands Bench Press & Powerlifting Championships which was held right here where they grabbed an unprecedented 9 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze medals to earn the Team title.
With so much money allotted for sports in the national budget, the time seems opportune for those responsible for its development to hasten the process that could pave the way for Guyana to once again re-emerge as a force in the Caribbean.
Our athletes, perhaps the only ones in the region, has long been denied proper facilities and expertise, but somehow just by their sheer dedication continue to make us proud and it is time that they be recognised for their sacrifice and commitment by those charged with the responsibility of developing sport.
The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation deserves credit for its performance as well as the Ministry of Sport for its support to the entity which begun last year when they helped procure a new set of weights for the championships and also assisted in other critical areas to ensure a smooth delivery of the event.
Sponsors must also come in for high praise for coming on board a sport that even though its record of results speak for itself, is still not regarded as one in the mainstream, but perhaps that is about to change.
Hosting major events such as this one in many instances helps to change the status of the sport and one could only hope that the popularity and outstanding performances of the athletes is utilised to maximum effect.
Guyana is on a course to host other major sporting events this year and even though we could be considered fledglings, the successful hosting of a segment of the 2007 Cricket World Cup has made us more equipped and boosted our confidence as well.
We are scheduled to host matches in the ICC T20 World Cup, the rugby segment of the CAC Games and that will be followed by the NAWIRA Championships and all this will certainly advance our position as a proper host nation.
The continued support of the Government will be crucial if we’re to successfully host all these engagements and we could only hope that the main actors recognise this.
