Over 150 persons benefitted from a joint health fair organised by the Lions Club of East Demerara in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the New Tabernacle Full Gospel Church in Buxton.
The fair was born out of the need to deal with the various health issues affecting residents on the Lower East Coast of Demerara.
Health services were provided in the area of blood pressure and blood sugar testing, diabetic care and cervical cancer testing among other health issues.
According to Debbie Griffith, President of the East Demerara Lions Club, medical supplies were donated by Medicare Pharmacy, the Ministry of Health and members of the Rotary Club who are in the medical and pharmaceutical profession.
“The Ministry of Health provided the medical personnel and in our club we have persons who volunteered their skills,” Griffith told this newspaper.
She said that some of the major complaints of persons who accessed the service include pain in the joints, high blood sugar and pressure, and stomach ailments.
“Persons with foot (problems), diabetic persons, we took care of that and some little minor colds here and there,” she explained.
According to Griffith, the response was overwhelming, since the idea was properly advertised by the church in and around the Buxton area.
Several persons from outside the village also benefitted from the venture.
“Actually the response today will have us do another medical outreach pretty soon and we plan to do it in the Mon Repos Market as early as next month.”
