Finishes 1 minute ahead of star studded field
By Franklin Wilson
The saying ‘Age is just a number’ was convincingly reemphasized yesterday when veteran cyclist Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton hammered a star studded field to take the second of three road races organised in memory of the Late President, Dr. Cheddi Jagan on the West Demerara, sponsored by Bedlow Claybrick and Fazil Ramzan.
The consistent and hard working Newton, who also won 7 of the 8 prime prizes, completed the 50-mile race in 2 hours 03 minutes 43 seconds exactly one minute ahead of the second pack, which included Alonzo Greaves who won the first race (55 miles) in Berbice two Sundays ago, Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, Junior Niles, Robin Persaud and Enzo Matthews who placed 2nd to 6th in that preceding order. Darren Allen took the other prime prize.
Newton, who has been dominating the veteran division since the start of the new season, established a high degree of fitness and superiority early in the event which pedaled off from the Wales Police Station on the West Bank of Demerara.
He {Newton} was not in a mood to stick around and play around with the others, breaking away at the Harbour Bridge on the upward journey. No other rider went after Newton and his level of fitness and strong mental capacity allowed him to maintain the lead until the end of the race which saw the junior and seniors turning back at Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo.
Berbician Neil Reece was again the number one junior relegating Paul De Nobrega to the runner-up position once again. Mahaica based Delon Decca copped 3rd. Virgil Jones was the leading veteran, outsprinting Kennard Lovell for the number one position, Linden Blackman placed 3rd.
Jude Bentley was also unstoppable in the upright category winning with ease way ahead of Richard Clarke and Andre Petty. Naiomi Singh was the lone female with the over 60 category going to Anthony Fariah ahead of Harry Lall.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Chairman of the Commemoration Committee Navin Chandrapal told the cyclists that their participation in the races continues to be a source of inspiration as they have all set high standards with the level of competitiveness displayed.
Chandrapal also reminded the riders that come 2011 another race will be added to the calendar to bring the total amount of races during March, to four, one every Sunday, all in memory of the Late Dr. Cheddi Jagan and Mrs. Janet Jagan.
Also addressing the riders was Director of Sport Neil Kumar who stated that he was happy with the level of competition while complimenting organiser Hassan Mohamed and Race Director Joseph Britton for the splendid work they continue to do.
Kumar noted that sponsorship is not a challenge for them since the corporate community is always impressed with Mohamed’s stewardship and that of the National Sports Commission.
The third race in the 3-part series is set for the Cinderella County of Essequibo on Sunday and will be another 50-miler which pedals off at Supenaam, proceeds to Charity before returning to Anna Regina for the finish.
