The 3rd Annual Spready’s Bakery sponsored Under-19 cricket tournament was unveiled by the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) on Thursday last.
Sponsored by Manoj and Narine Singh of Spready’s Bakery at the cost of $200,000, the tournament has attracted about 40 teams from Regions 5 & 6 and would be played on a round-robin basis in the opening rounds and a knock-out format from the quarter-finals.
Public Relations Officer of the BCB, Hilbert Foster, who procured the sponsorship on behalf of the Board, praised Spready’s Bakery for the investment in youths and the development of cricket in the Ancient County.
Cricket, Foster stated, was at a high level in Berbice due to the work of the Board while stressing that the serious investment in channeling the player’s development from the Under-13 to 19 levels was important for them.
The long standing Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club Secretary/CEO disclosed that the BCB would use the Spready’s tournament as a guide to select players for the upcoming Under-19 Inter Zone tournament from which the Berbice Inter County squad would be selected.
The winning team is guaranteed $40,000 and trophy, the runner-up $25,000 and trophy while several other prizes are at stake.
Board Treasurer Anil Beharry proudly disclosed that financially, the Berbice Board was solid and this is as a direct result of very strong and careful financial management coupled with prudent accountability. Tournaments, Mr. Beharry noted, are completed on schedule and within the established budget. He also praised Spready’s for staying on board despite the difficult economic times.
Keith Foster, President of the Berbice Cricket Board, was loud in praise of his administration’s work over the last two years, stating that the game has undergone massive transformation recently citing that it was once the passion for fans in Berbice.
The President disclosed that the County was assured of sponsorship for every level from Under-13 to the Senior levels and the Board was determined that Berbice would not only defend Inter County tournaments they won last year but would win those they failed to win in 2009.
He called on young cricketers to work hard on their game by correcting technical deficiencies and to ensure that they are disciplined on and off the field while being proper role models to every youth they interact with.
In an invited comment after the launching, Spready’s Bakery representative Mr. N. Fudadin stated that his Company was pleased to invest in Berbice cricket as they were impressed by the work of the Board and that it was also a way of giving back to the community for its support over the years. The first two years of the tournament was quite successful with Rose Hall Town Pepsi winning the titles on both occasions.
Clubs who have an interest in being a part of the tournament are asked to call at the office of the Berbice Cricket Board on Telephone No 333 2375 urgently as the tournament starts this week. Clubs that have received forms are reminded to fill out same and submit to the office as early as possible so that the fixtures can be prepared ahead of the bowl off.
