Dear Editor,
The current society we live in is one that is fast becoming iniquitous; the moral values which stood as a hallmark for decades are fast shrinking and it appears like we are vulnerable and oblivious to this norm of life, especially in communities where less opportunity exist for our young people.
Only recently I attended a Parents’ Teachers Association meeting (PTA) and was shocked to have learnt of the daily unbecoming behaviour of our children within our schools, and the big question is asked how have we gotten to this dreadful point?
The home is the first institution for learning and as the old parable says “charity beings at home”, and correctly so, but further and further our children are becoming violent, ignorant, drugs addictive and have created a life of misery and this have contributed to a break down in law and order.
The big question we should be asking is: are mothers and fathers still in control? Or our children are in command and run things?
Something is definitely wrong; all the moral values grand parents have embedded in our families have lost sight and are now dead blind.
Respect and discipline have lost place within our culture; religions have impacted very little on helping win back our youth from these influences of society, this is not to say the churches, temple and masjid are not trying, but with modernisation and technological advancements, we have to admit it has caused an enormous moral hemorrhage.
I want to make an urgent plea to parents, leaders, educators and society as a whole, to let us make a commitment to instill in our children moral values for healthy and wholesome living.
It’s not too late, we can take immediate steps to at least save our society from further embarrassments.
We cannot afford to sit and see our children continue on this repulsive path, let us remember the more effort we put into any task, sweeter the benefits.
The task may be difficult, but as one small child puts it to me, together we can change the world, if we believe it, together we can regain control, together we can build a nation of high standard and together we can make a start today, let us become involved together.
