Less than one week subsequent to the inaugural Pro/Am Boxing card, slated for the Welfare Ground, Canje Berbice, promoter of the event, Orlan Rogers said that despite a favourable response from the corporate community, much more is needed to make the event a success.

Several amateur and professional boxers from Berbice and Georgetown are expected to provide fistic entertainment for residents of the boxing starved community and Rogers said that he is heartened by the commitment demonstrated by the boxers during their preparations.
In the first amateur bout Richard Williamson (PRBG) opposes Edwin Richards (GDF), while Joel Williamson (PRBG) and Sean Griffith will face each other in the second bout. Jamal Eastman (PRBG) will next face Ezekiel Akrah while Kelvin Wilson (GDF) and Kelsey George clash in the final amateur bout.
The professionals take over half an hour after the amateur bouts would have concluded with Laurex Benn fighting Patrick Boston in a junior/middleweight bout. Featherweights, Shawn Pyle and Clifton Barker are scheduled to battle in the second professional fight while Quinda Rogers and Mandessa Moses oppose each other in the main bout of the professional segment. The card is organized by Rogers in association with Joel Mohabir of Sanjay’s Jewellery, Berbice.
Meanwhile, Rogers traveled from his Berbice base Monday to tie up arrangements with officials of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) even as he petitioned the corporate community for much needed assistance. After spending about an hour with the President of the GBBC, Peter Abdool, Rogers received the go ahead to stage the bouts. Earlier, when this newspaper had contacted Mr. Abdool he had said that while Rogers had intimated an interest in staging the card, the enactment of several prerequisites were still necessary before the card could have received the green light.
Mr. Abdool was very optimistic that Rogers would have satisfied the criteria for the staging of the bouts.
Meanwhile, Rogers is appealing to the business community for help. He said that the venture was a means of bringing boxing to the people of Berbice.
He noted that Berbicians have always staked a claim in the boxing arena. He mentioned such names as Al Thomas, a former heavyweight boxer who holds the distinction of sparring a few rounds with legendary boxer, Mohammed Ali when he visited Guyana years ago. Other notable Berbician boxers include Jeff Roberts, Robin ‘The Albion Prince’ Lall and the late Ramesh Best.
