Berbice remained unperturbed under pressure as defending champions Demerara made a hash of a small victory target in the deciding final round of the Castrol 50-over under-15 Inter-County cricket tournament at the DCC ground yesterday.
Left-arm spinner Vishal Lord (3-19), off-spinner Vishal Narayan (3-4) and pacer Dexter George (2-28) combined to restrict Berbice to 123 off 39.1 overs before the home team labored for 48.2 overs on a slow track and small ground before being dismissed for 114 to spark wild celebrations from the Berbicians.
Left-hander Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai, aiming to represent Guyana for the 4th consecutive year in this year’s regional under-15 tournament in Trinidad later this month, top scored with 23 from 35 balls with just a solitary boundary after opener Shimron Hetmyer, the younger brother of former National under-19 batsman Seon, had stroked 3 fours in a cameo 20 from 28 balls on the fast outfield.
However, the Demerara spin attack never allowed the batsmen to score freely on a track tailor-made for spin bowling and Shailendra Shameer (17) was the only other Berbician to reach double figures.
Watched by a small crowd which included West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Demerara lost their best batsman with the score on 22 when left-handed opener Brian Sattaur was run out for 12 and although Kamesh Yadram tried to keep his team in the hunt with 33 before he was run out at 102-7, the middle order allowed the bowlers to keep the shackles on the batsmen leaving too much on the last pair to get 12 runs from the last two overs.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who took 49 overs for his 49 against Essequibo in Anna Regina, again struggled to get the ball away and the technically sound left-handed son of Test batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, took 83 balls for his 16 yesterday as the required run rate escalated with every dot ball.
Moti-Kanhai, a wily back-of-the-hand left-arm spinner, grabbed 3-24 in a match winning performance while the pint size Shawn Pereira had 2-16 and Davin Baldeo 2-3.
The off-the field problems of the Guyana Cricket Board executives continued yesterday with a disorganized presentation ceremony after the players and others present had to wait for a long time after the conclusion of the match for the presentation.
GCB Vice-President Fizul Bacchus, who is locked in an administrative battle with Bissoon Singh (the other GCB Vice-President) for the position of acting GCB President in the absence of the ill GCB Head Chetram Singh, was the only GCB executive present among the presentation party yesterday.
Only the winning team collected a trophy and former Guyana fast bowler Robert ‘Pacer’ Adonis, speaking at the Presentation ceremony expressed disappointment that there was no trophy for the runner-up team.
There was also no Man-of-the-match yesterday as the young cricketers and Guyana’s cricket continues to suffer as the power struggle among officials continues unchecked.
The National squad to participate in Trinidad was selected yesterday but up to press time no official release was sent to this newspaper by the GCB.
