With the threat posed by gunmen and allegations of police misconduct, the government has embarked on a programme of installed closed circuit television cameras at all police stations.
Already cameras have been installed at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary and at several police stations in the city.
This newspaper observed closed circuit cameras at the Brickdam, Kitty, Alberttown, East La Penitence and Ruimveldt Police Stations as well as the West Ruimveldt Police Outpost.
A source at the Kitty Police Station informed that there are a total of 13 cameras there alone.
At least all of the stations mentioned have come under attack by gunmen at some time or the other.
Police Commissioner Henry Green yesterday confirmed that the CCTVs were installed to allow for better security of the police’s properties.
“As you know the stations have come under attack previously and this will provide some level of security,” the Commissioner told this newspaper.
He said that the initiative is being funded by the government of Guyana and in time, most, if not all police stations will be equipped with surveillance cameras.
Apart from the security concerns, the cameras will also be able to capture the conduct of ranks at the stations where they are installed.
This means that allegations of police misconduct could be speedily investigated, since there is real time monitoring of the cameras in designated offices.
This newspaper understands that monitors are located at the Office of the President, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Office of the Commissioner of Police and the Office of the Divisional Commander.
