A star-studded Media cricket team defeated Bill Express Titans male team by 65 runs in a feature T20, while the Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company Female team got the better of the female Titans by 26 runs in a T10 encounter when Western Union held their annual Stakeholders activity on Sunday last at the Banks DIH Ground, Thirst Park. The Media blasted their way to an imposing 183 all out from their 20 overs, with opening batsman John Ramsingh striking 53 decorated with 3 sixes and 5 exquisitely driven fours. Titans found the going tough against some disciplined bowling by the Media led by Calvin Roberts who grabbed 5-23. They were sent packing for 118 off 15 overs. A robust 62 by Ishaka Jackman (3×6 & 9×4) who was dropped 3 times failed to save the Titans from defeat. The only other batsman reaching double figures was Jason Mohamed who stroked 19 which contained 2 sixes and a solitary boundary.
In blazing sunshine and an atmosphere of camaraderie prevailing within the Thirst Park venue, there was surely a serious thirst on the part of all the teams for victory despite the friendly nature of the matches.
In the main event, Titans Captain Vaughn Alleyne won the toss and invited the Media, Captained by Sean Devers to take first strike on a dry and dusty Thirst Park wicket.
Ramsingh and Avenash Ramzan strolled to the wicket with the intent of setting a solid foundation for the others batters to build on. But that was not to be as Ramzan was the first to go for 8 (1×4).
The Titan bowlers however were not able to keep any sort of stranglehold on the Media team as the runs kept flowing at a rapid pace despite the fall of wickets.
Ramsingh kept a level head despite wickets falling around him and brought up a deserved half century but was unfortunately run out soon after for 53. Munroe (2×6 & 3×4) kept the momentum going with a well composed 30, Griffith (3×6 & 2×4) blasted away in the late overs for his 30 also to keep the Media team ahead. Extras, was the second highest contributor with 37. Rawle Toney stroked 12 (2×6).
Nicko Cummings (3) and Paul Persaud (2) were the pick of the bowlers for Titans who in reply never really threatened to come close to the winning score as they lost wickets regularly owing to some restrictive bowling and excellent Captaincy by Devers.
Rocking the Titans innings was fast bowler Roberts whose pace and swing proved difficult for the Titan batters to negotiate.
Only Jackman with 62 and Mohamed (19) reached double figures. Extras contributed 13.
Roberts ended with figures of 5-23, Devers offering excellent support with 2-10 from 3, Kizan Brummell 2-15 from 4 while Griffith backed up with 1-14, Titans bowled out for 118 to lose by 65 runs.
The female encounter was also an exciting clash with GT&T posting a challenging 91-3 off their 10 overs; Captain Carlotta Lee-John blasting 36 decorated with 7 fours and Vanita Bacchus striking 33 which contained 5 boundaries. Extras chipped in with 15.
Titan females found the going tough in pursuit of the winning target and were limited to 65-3 when their overs expired.
Keane Goodrich top scored with 18 while Lueanna Semple (17), Nina Benjamin (16), Shonelle Wills (13) and extras 10 also contributed runs in a losing cause.
Main organiser of the event, Natheeah King, Marketing Manager of Grace Kennedy Remittance Services, commenting after the games, said she was very pleased with all that transpired on the day noting that all the teams had great fun and that was their main aim.
The winning teams received trophies. (F. Wilson)
