Residents of Glazier Lust, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, are frustrated at the partial electricity they have been receiving for the past two weeks.
They say that this is affecting their water supply since the GWI pump has to be powered by electricity.
According to Maniram Doodnauth, the constant blackouts started on February 28 and have continued to date almost daily, the longest being on Phagwah Day which was almost 20 hours.
He said that because of this condition, many problems have arisen with the accessibility of water for consumption and household uses being the most acute.
“Even to give the animals that are thirsty since the trenches have dried up because of the El Nino. Dr. Waldron who is the head of the National Diary Development Programme (NDDP) had come to the area and promised to make an intervention with GWI to assist the animals in receiving water.”
However, nothing has happened to date, and residents are suffering since the lack of potable water combined with the lack of electricity has caused great concerns in the area.
Doodnauth added that all the framers are affected.
Livestock, cash crops, and rice farmers are having hell especially since some of the water is concentrated with salt which damages their farming area.
This newspaper contacted Guyana Power Light in New Amsterdam but was given other numbers of different departments that were unable to give a comment on the situation being faced by the residents in Glazier Lust Mahaicony.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
