Tackle Bayamon FC of Puerto Rico & St Vincent’s Systems 3
By Franklin Wilson
The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) competing for the first time in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Champions League Qualifying competition will be aiming to mark out their opponents when they get into action on March 25 and 27 in host nation Puerto Rico.
Round one qualifying matches have been rescheduled twice to date, the last date given was March 16, 18 and 20 but have since been put forward to March 23, 25 and 27.
The Runner-up club of the Jamaican National League was originally placed in this group but according to reports has pulled out of the competition, making the battle a three-way tie. Two teams will advance to round two of qualifying from this group. The host club is Bayamon while representing St. Vincent & the Grenadines is Systems 3. The change of dates will not affect the focus of the Army according to Captain Murray, the Assistant Manager of the team.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport Capt. Murray said the team will leave on March 21st for Puerto Rico where they are confident of excelling.
“We have been training very hard and the team is gelling as a unit and understanding each other. The coaching staff led by Edison Gabriel Dos Santos has been doing a great job in preparing the team and the boys have been responding very well and are showing the required improvement and discipline. So I think our chances of doing well are very good. “
The other local team competing in the Championship, Alpha United and the GDF played to a tough 0-0 draw in a practice game on Thursday last. Both teams looked well in attack and created quite a number of chances but the defence of both sides stood up to the task of defending their area admirably, good signs ahead of their respective group games.
Alpha will host group D matches on March 24, 26 and 28 at the GCC ground.
Given the fact that the GDF are participating in the GFF National Super League and preparations also ongoing for the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Premier League tournament, only two coaches will travel with the team to Puerto Rico. Dos Santos will be accompanied by Calvin Allen. Managing the team is Major Burnette with Sgt. Abiola Blair performing duties as the Physiotherapist.
The budget for the GDF to travel to Puerto Rico is in the vicinity of 7.5 million dollars.
