Guyanese criminals seeking refuge in Suriname will now have to think twice about that choice of destination, as Guyana and its neighbour to the east have agreed to have a more efficient system of information exchange on criminal suspects fleeing this jurisdiction to avoid prosecution.
According to Suriname’s Minister of Justice and Police, Chandrikapersad Santokhi, both sides are pleased with the current state of affairs with regards to the provision of information on fleeing suspects.
He said that based on the information provided by Guyanese law enforcement authorities, Surinamese officials have been able to capture criminal suspects who were seeking refuge in the Dutch-speaking Republic.
“We agreed to have constant exchanges of information, we agreed to update the information on a regular basis and to have more real-time information from our counterparts so that we can act proactively when receiving the information,” Santokhi said.
On Tuesday last, the two sides agreed to conduct joint criminal investigations, the objective being to utilise each other’s resources.
Guyana’s Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee, said that information flow between the law enforcement agencies of the two countries is an ongoing process. However, Tuesday’s meeting sought to fine tune the existing arrangement to determine where gaps exist and to address the deficiencies.
“I think the meeting accomplished those objectives in terms of addressing those gaps and defects, thus making for greater efficiency in terms of our collaboration,” Rohee stated.
It is the general feeling that fugitives from justice in Guyana flee east to Suriname where they hope to find a safe passage to freedom.
However, security officials from both countries are keen to ensure that neither one of them is a safe haven for criminals fleeing the respective jurisdictions.
