Dear Editor,
The first time Guyana eliminated a country in World Cup qualifiers was (1980) when the Earl O’Neal led squad destroyed Grenada 5-2 at Bourda in the first encounter of the home and away fixtures.
Goal scorers for the ‘Land of many waters’ were Clyde ‘Oiler’ Watson (2), Gordon Braithwaite (1); Ashton Taylor (1) and Clyde ‘Woolly’ Forde (1).
Guyana then traveled to St. Georges and silenced a boisterous and partisan home crowd with an emphatic 3-2 victory.
The historical squad that sent Grenada packing was: Earl O’Neal – Captain, Gordon Braithwaite, Ashton Taylor – deceased, Clyde ‘Oiler’ Watson, Clyde ‘Woolly’ Forde – deceased, Bunny Anthony, Denzil Thompson, Kenneth Price, Vibert DeFreitas, Clive Nedd – deceased, Aubrey Hutson, Monty Mentore, Leonard Williams, Terrence Archer, Charles Ashford, Marlon De Souza, Ken O’Donoghue, Clive Jordan, Fitzalbert Pellew, Neville Johnson, Selwyn Hutson, Neil Humphrey, Calmeth Young, Trevor Gibbs, George Breen – Coach, Billy Braithwaite – Manager. Now 31 years later, at the same venue, the ‘Land of many waters’ represented this time by the mighty Lady Jags, sent packing one of Guyana’s World Cup tormentors – Suriname and in the process finalised things by disposing the other Group A pretenders St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The next stage of qualifying could pose some problems, but these Lady Jags seem destined for Germany.
Let us see if the GFF, corporate Guyana and the Ministry of Sports and Culture will guide the path.
