Dear Editor,
Reading of the ordeal of Roxanne Goodman in a publication of Kaieteur News, dated March 8, 2010, caused me to speculate and supposed many others as to how many occasions did this woman experienced grave hurt from her husband without intervention from law enforcers.
I distinctly remembered the article quoting the daughter of the abused saying she witnessed her father on my occasions battered her mother. At one point in fear of her life the fearful mother fled to Suriname for her safety.
We now stumble upon my thought provoking questions, why did the violated Roxanna Goodman feels she had to go into hiding in fear of her demise instead of alerting the police? Why should a victim of such a serious crime continue to be a victim, while the abuser in an unhindered way holds possession of his freedom? Two reasons I was able to arrive at. One being the abused has strong sentiments for her attacker and refused to see him behind bars and second the police showed little interest into his arrest, probably after the wife reconciled with her unforgiving husband. The article mentioned and I quote, “when this newspaper visited the hospital, the woman was surrounded by relatives and friends offering prayers for her speedy recovery”.
Surely they would have had knowledge of her prior abuses before it came to the extreme. Had they reported the matter to the police on past knowledge of their friend’s torment? Perhaps they view it as none of their concern. “Maybe saying, that when she finally had enough she will seek the help of the police”.
If so not being the case here, I’m certain it was in other scenarios involving the abuse of spouses. Be enlightened, that domestic violence is everyone’s duty to consult the authorities. A few months back a woman was gashed on to her throat by her husband.
After her recovery she decided to drop the charges and her husband regained his freedom. A few weeks ago the story of her death by her husband was in one of our dailies. Have we forgotten the meaning of our motto “One people, one nation, one destiny”? In very simple terms it means, we ought to look out for our neighbours.
