A 38-year-old Berbice man who served time recently for wounding committed on his reputed wife is in police custody nursing a bullet wound to his right leg after he allegedly attacked a police rank.
The police report that at about 14:30hrs on Monday last, Raywattie ‘Babita’, 36, of Hampshire Squatting Area, Corentyne, reported to the Albion Police Station that Hemant Balo, also of Hampshire Squatting area, and with whom she shared a previous relationship, entered her premises armed with a cutlass and made threats on her life.
To escape the threats she managed to jump through a window of her home.
According to the police, an armed Constable responded to the report by visiting the location. Balo stood armed with a cutlass and the rank allegedly informed him of the report made against him, but these reports were met with verbal abuses. The police in a release stated that Balo advanced towards the policeman in a menacing manner with the cutlass in his hand.
The Constable reportedly stepped backwards while calling on Balo to desist from his actions, but he continued to advance towards the rank who fell backwards.
Balo allegedly rushed towards the rank and the rank in turn resorted to the use of force and shot him to his right thigh.
Balo was arrested and taken to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was treated and sent away. He is in police custody according to a police release issued yesterday.
The Police Constable sustained a sprained ankle when he fell.
