Dear Editor,
I have been following the articles on the goings on in Region Four and to say that I was shocked that these are the types of things that are going on in Guyana today is an understatement.
My God! There could be no more damning an indictment of a government than this. What is really going on in Guyana today?
Who is steering the ship of state? Where is President Jagdeo when it is clear that all hell has broken loose and the public purse has been left open, in the middle of the road for these people to take what they want?
Forbes Burnham, for all his faults, must be smiling in his grave and saying “now you see what I was saving you all from.”
I visit my homeland as often as I could and I am appalled, each time I come, that wherever I go, you can sometimes count on one hand, the number of Afro Guyanese in the various places of business.
When you do find one, he or she is doing the most menial of duties. Our people have been sidelined, marginalised and left in large measure, to fend for themselves as best they can, while the state’s purse is being plundered with impunity.
Contracts are being awarded by all sorts of nefarious means and shenanigans. No wonder the mansions being erected belong in the main to one ethnic group.
No wonder our people are turning to crimes of the worst kind to make a living. No work. No means to provide for one’s self and family, while we watch our tax dollars being doled out by the millions to friends, party supporters, family and cronies.
I don’t know what it is going to take to turn this situation around, but it is clear that if this trend continues, the chasm between ethnic and social boundaries will continue to widen and Guyana will descend to depths that may make it virtually impossible from which to recover.
In the meantime, Jagdeo, surrounded by his adoring fans, continues to fiddle while Guyana burns. What a tragedy!
Patriotic But Sad Guyanese
