Dear Editor,
I refer to Kaieteur News article, captioned “Elaborate scheme led to swindled millions” published on March 5, and wish to commend Government on its exposure and investigation of this corruption.
Now what needs to be done is an immediate audit of all contracts awarded by Government in every region.
An independent group of auditors should be appointed by the administration to allow for total transparency and accountability.
I feel sure that the fraud discovered in Region Four is not an isolated incident, but merely the tip of the iceberg.
Corruption is one of the main obstacles to development in Guyana. It robs the country of substantial revenues from all ports of entry – the Police Traffic Department, and from industries such as, Fisheries, Gold and Diamond.
Lucrative contracts awarded to friends and party supporters must be thoroughly investigated. Politicians and those placed in the public trust need to set the right example, or face the wrath of the courts.
One can argue that the lack of a livable income is directly responsible for the growth of this cancer know as corruption, and this may be true to some degree.
Greed, the abuse of power and the betrayal of the public’s trust, are also directly responsible.
If elected government officers, politicians, businessmen and other leaders in the community are known to be corrupt, then they do not possess the integrity to stop others from being so.
This investigation is certainly a step in the right direction; let us hope it continues.
Harry Gill
