Police were up to late last night hunting for a juvenile murder accused who escaped from the Turkeyen Police Station lock-ups yesterday afternoon.
The juvenile, who is accused of the murder of a woman on the West Coast of Demerara ran past a recruit who had opened the door to the cell he was in to take out another prisoner.
According to reports, a recruit and the sergeant were at the facility at the time of the escape which occurred at 17:50 hours.
This newspaper understands that the senior rank had instructed his junior to take out a prisoner from the cell he (the escapee) and others were being held in.
As the recruit opened the door, the juvenile, aged 16, bolted past him and made good his escape before efforts to recapture him materialised.
Police combed the Sophia area but found no trace of the escapee.
This newspaper understands that they also made checks at the young man’s mother’s home on the East Bank of Demerara.
But from all reports they will have to resume their search for the teenager tomorrow.
They have however warned that they will institute charges against anyone who harbours the fugitive.
