Suriname face St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Lady Jags play Friday
By Franklin Wilson
The day of reckoning has arrived with Guyana, Suriname and St. Vincent and the Grenadines beginning their quest for World Cup glory when the Caribbean Football Union qualifying tournament for the 2010 – 2011 CONCACAF Champions League, group A kicks off at the GCC ground Bourda this afternoon.
The host team will watch their opponents Suriname and St. Vincent & the Grenadines face off in the first game of the 3-way tie which will kick off at 15:30 hrs.
Yesterday, the respective head coaches disclosed that they are quite confident their charges will produce the required goods to take them to victory, the top two teams from this group advancing to the next stage.
President of the Guyana Football Federation Colin Klass welcomed the teams to Guyana and wished them the best in their quest for glory. He made a call for fans to support the various teams especially the Lady Jags.
Technical Director for Female football in Guyana Mark Rodrigues said preparations for his team has been going as scheduled with some minor adjustments made following the placement of Cuba in another group.
“We have been progressing quite well and I am pleased with everything so far and looking forward to this competition. We are very confident of doing well.”
Rodrigues noted that the tournament played in December which involved Guyana (local & overseas) and Suriname was a learning process for both countries to get to know each other, highlighting that the result was just a friendly one. Both Guyana teams had defeated the Surinamese back then.
“Both teams did a number of things then that we would not do when we play on Friday so we are starting from scratch. They are a quality team, we are excited about playing them again and we know they’re going to come back with a different look and a lot more desire to be successful but that just pushes us to raise the bar even more for the game.”
Suriname’s Head Coach Eduard Redjosentono said the team which is all local based has had good preparations and they are here to play a good game.
St. Vincent & the Grenadines Head Coach Kendale Mercury noted that based on their research, female football is not as popular in his country as in Guyana and Suriname. While not having an established Women’s League, Mercury stated that they do have women who love the game and play on a daily basis as a means of recreation.
He disclosed that the new Executive of the SVG has been trying to improve the sport and they have been in training for about 20 months about 3-days each week.
“We came from seeing ladies who could not even do the basic technical things as in receiving and passing the ball to players who are now confident and will give a good account of themselves.”
Mercury shared that they have improved to the extent that one of the players gained a scholarship to a college in the United States of America.
“We know that there is a lot of work to be done but we came down here in high spirits; we know that it is open for anyone of the teams and we are quite confident that we will come out on top and qualify.”
Guyana will play Suriname on Friday and St. Vincent & the Grenadines on Sunday at the same venue and times. The top two teams will advance.
Group B of the qualifying stage will be hosted in Puerto Rico and will involve Trinidad & Tobago, Dominica and St. Kitts & Nevis.
Group C will see host St. Lucia, Antigua & Barbuda and the United States Virgin Islands going head to head.
Group D has host Dominican Republic, Cuba and the Turks & Caicos Islands battling while Group E will see Barbados entertaining Anguilla and Grenada.
