Cyclists to compete in Berbice on Sunday
The Ancient County is getting ready to welcome the best riders in the land on Sunday when the 13th Annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial 55-mile cycle road race sponsored by BK International comes off.
Based on the level of competitiveness shown in races so far this year, Sunday’s race is expected to be a keen contest. Defending champion Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay has been very quiet so far but his fellow competitors cannot take that for granted.
The inform Geron Williams who placed 3rd last year and also won the junior category along with Alonzo Greaves, Robin Persaud (2nd last year), Daniel Ramchurejee and Albert Philander among others will present stiff competition for Mc Kay.
Leading the Berbice contingent will be leading junior cyclist Neil Reece who will have to contend with Rastaff O’Selmo and Paul DeNobreiga for the top spot among the juniors.
Raymond Newton is the favorite to take the veteran category ahead of Kennard Lovell who placed first last year. Newton has also been placing among the top six overall and is expected to continue along that vein.
Upright riders will have to chance to showcase their talent for the first time this year on the road. Dexter Wilson won last year. Competitors will also be aiming to lower last year’s winning time of 2 hours 15 minutes 46.52 seconds.
The race will pedal off from Freedom House, New Amsterdam at 09:00hrs proceed to No. 55 Village on the Corentyne before returning to Port Mourant, Babu John for the finish.
Veterans, ladies and upright riders will turn back at Hogstyle to finish at Port Mourant.
The first (6) finishers will receive prizes as will the first three juniors, veterans, upright and ladies. The first over rider over the age of 60 and the oldest cyclist to finish the event will also be rewarded. Eight (8) prime prizes will be at stake during the course of the race.
Transportation will leave the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport at 05:30hrs on Sunday for New Amsterdam.
Meanwhile, cyclists are reminded that they must wear their club jerseys and their respective numbers. (Franklin Wilson)
