– El Nino to be major focus
Children involved in the Environmental Community Health Organisation (ECHO) Eco-Clubs will be exposed to information about the impact of the current El Nino weather pattern when a special Champion against Climate Change activity gets underway later this month.
According to Eco-Clubs Co-ordinator, Georgina Lewis, more than 80 children are expected to participate in this activity.
Aimed at further raising awareness among children about climate change, the activity set for March 19, next, at Cara Lodge and will be held in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) and the Guyana Water Incorporated.
According to Lewis, the objective is to raise awareness and encourage the children to take leadership on environmental issues in their local communities. At the highly anticipated forum the children will interact with representatives of the various collaborating entities on health and environmental issues including the El Nino phenomenon.
This, according to Lewis has become a source of concern to those operating within the Agricultural sector and other stakeholders. There will also be discussions and activities on water conservation and purification, littering and climate change.
It should be noted that climate change is about any significant change in measures of climate such as temperature, precipitation, wind and other weather patterns that last for decades or longer, Lewis has underscored.
As such, it is now common knowledge that the world’s climate is showing signs of a shift, becoming warmer with more precipitation events more frequent and severe droughts, extreme weather events such as flooding and tropical cyclones rise in sea level and increased air pollution.
Other effects may result from ecosystem shifting and disruption, Lewis has highlighted.
Therefore public awareness and communication are critical to empowering residents in local communities to take action and responsibility for the health of their environment. ECHO according to Lewis has always held the view that active communities such as schools should be targeted for such awareness and action.
This activity she said is particularly geared to achieve precisely this objective.
Also, on Saturday next, eco-club members will distribute flyers and talk with people in the main commercial areas of the city of Georgetown about the urgent need to keep their surroundings clean and to care the environment.
