President Bharrat Jagdeo joined several devotees of the Muslim faith at the Windsor Forest (East) Masjid, West Coast Demerara for Eid Melaud-Un-Nabbi where he reiterated Government’s policy on religion that has allowed Guyana to hold the reputation as a relatively tolerant country.
The Head of State’s argument was vindicated by guest speaker, Shaik Ibrahim Habach-Imam, a Syrian native who was elated at the fact that Youman Nabi is observed as a national holiday in Guyana.
Shaik Ibraim was accompanied by another guest speaker, Moulana Siddiq Ahmad Nasir, whose sermon focused on the history of Islam.
President Jagdeo commended them for their wealth of knowledge.
“His (Moulana Siddiq Ahmad Nasir’s) lecture I am sure will lead us all to greater understanding of the Holy Quran, the life and the works of the Holy Prophet,” President Jagdeo said.
Addressing the large gathering about Government’s approach to tolerance and respect, President Jagdeo alluded to Switzerland, which in recent years agreed to a constitutional ban on architectural designs similar to those built on top of mosques and the ban on Muslim headwear in schools in France.
“How tolerant is this?” the President asked.
He implored all Guyanese to demonstrate by example that Guyana is among the best models for tolerance worldwide.
The President also encouraged the gathering to build on the powerful tool of knowledge by delving into the scriptures in the same manner that secular education is treated.
Many Guyanese share their predominant faith with countries in the Middle East which the Guyana Government is focusing attention as part of its foreign policy to strengthen investment and trade.
In early 2009, President Jagdeo travelled to Libya and Jordan among other Middle Eastern countries and in early 2010 to Iran and Kuwait, where he met several of the country’s premieres and held fruitful discussions.
His last two visits were met with criticisms by some sections in society who felt that it would not augur well for the relationship between Guyana and the United States of America.
The President was peeved at the concerns raised.
“I made it clear that the Government that I belong to and the party that I come from, practice an independent foreign policy. We are not here to please any country. We are here to look after the interest of our people,” President Jagdeo said.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
