Sugar has and continues to be the backbone of Guyana’s economy. It is the main income earner, as well as a great employer of Guyanese and I can say all other income earners are a spin off from sugar, whether we believe it or not.
The prosperity of the 1970’s came from sugar, foreign income earnings quadrupled around that time. Today the situation is vastly different because of a number of factors.
Firstly, we are not a privileged lot in having our sugar accessing European markets duty free, while the price for sugar on the open market is sliding.
Crop yields per hectare are also a source for concern, the amount of sugar produced per hectare keeps falling each year. Yet investments in the sugar industry keep mounting and little returns to show for monies spent.
Skeldon again comes into focus, Government continues to pump millions into a venture that is failing by the hour and the light of day has not dawned on them that this Chinese experiment is doomed.
To play around an industry that is vital to our survival as a nation worries me a lot and I am compelled to write hoping that something is done quickly to halt this wastage of our nation’s money.
In an earlier article I made mention of three sister CARICOM states that have severed ties with China and much was gained from such a bold move. Again I say Guyana is in good company. It is time to say goodbye to China’s experiment. This is not the time for exchange of diplomatic pleasantries, it is time to make an about turn and change course.
