Jailed for 4 years, fined $8M
A Guyanese was nabbed early yesterday morning at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport with some 10 kilograms of cocaine concealed in packets labeled baking powder.
The man, Edward Shaka Martin, of 72 Public Road, Kitty was about to board BW 484 destined to United States of America via Trinidad. He was nabbed around 5:30 hours by ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit.
Reports are that the man’s suitcase was searched and the items suspected to be cocaine were found.
Subsequent tested revealed that the contents of the packets were indeed cocaine. As such the man was subsequently charged and made to appear before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.
He was unrepresented and pleaded guilty to the charge of trafficking in 9 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
He was sentenced to four years imprisonment and fined $8,924,400, three times the value of the drug.
