Female World Cup qualifiers set to kick off next week at GCC
Assistant Lady Jags Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover said he is pleased with the level of work being put in by the local based Lady jags ahead of group A action in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) World Cup qualifying competition.
Guyana will be hosting group A from next Wednesday at the GCC Ground Bourda and will face Cuba, Suriname and St Vincent & the Grenadines.
Dover told Kaieteur Sport that so far the players have been improving daily. “They have shown progress from when we started last week. I’ve seen improvement in their condition and technical abilities and we are working to ensure that their fitness levels are up to competition levels.”
Yesterday afternoon, the ladies did some physical work along with some members of the Alpha United senior male team. The session saw the players involved in some small sided games which were aimed at conditioning, speed and possession.
Dover believes that the Lady Jags will give a very good account of themselves in the competition and emerge as the top team. The USA and Canada based players are expected to arrive in Guyana on February 28 rearing and ready for battle.
Technical Director of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) female Programme, Mark Rodrigues had stated before that he is confident Guyana will do well in this competition.
Sessions will continue twice daily at the Carifesta Sports Complex ground. The players training are Goalkeepers Ruth George, Ronette Cort and Ronette Albert, Sonia Griffith, Collette Hope, Lorian Toney, Tricia Munro and Akhella Castello.
