The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) says that it has installed 80 new services in the Bare Root community in the past months, reducing the incidences of residents having to travel far distances to fetch water.
According to GWI, the measures are to maintain adequate levels of service during the current El Nino crisis.
Senior water officials, who recently visited the community of Bare Root, East Coast Demerara, said that the campaign to monitor communities with supply challenges and to detect leaks is ongoing and every effort to provide relief to customers is being undertaken.
“Bare Root is one of several communities we are concerned about, especially in light of the drought-like conditions,” says Chief Executive, GWI, Yuri Chandisingh.
“Customers were not receiving an adequate supply. However, we are happy to report that the new system has provided much relief – this is especially important because of the on-going crisis.”
Before the commencement of the new water supply project in Bare Root in June 2009, parts of the community were without water service. Customers, GWI admitted, were forced to seek water from other residents and travelled long distances to these points and waited for lengthy periods to obtain a bucket of water.
The entity has since replaced the entire system by installing new pipelines and service connections in light of the old distribution system’s poor performance. The works were completed only last month.
The Chief Executive noted that the new system is now performing better than the previous one and has allowed numerous residents to benefit from individual services in their yards.
The Chief Executive stated that constant monitoring of all problematic areas will continue during the El Nino crisis and beyond.
