The Mashramani spirit was in full swing on Friday when the Georgetown Municipal Day Care Services set in motion their annual Road March which has over the years been deemed an ‘energetic engagement’.
The event was held under the theme ‘Diversities of Our Heritage’. Colourfully decked in patriotic outfits, the revellers as little as two years old jumped and waved excitedly as they followed the lead of their teachers who were no less conspicuous.
Under the watchful eyes of police officers backed by the Constabulary’s Bicycle Patrol, the enthusiastic pack of revellers moved off from the Promenade Gardens on Middle Street and headed into the bustling Main Street gyrating to music emanating from a motorcar.
The revelry continued along Church Street and then into Carmichael Street before returning to the Promenade Gardens where the still energetic children were provided with light refreshments to help cool down the heat of the day.
According to Paulette Bollers, Director of Municipal Day Care Services, the road march activity is an annual venture in commemoration of the Republic Anniversary and is in fact one of the biggest activities undertaken by the Day Care Centres.
The Georgetown Municipality has five day care centres under its charge. These are located at Industrial Site, South Road, Festival City, Charlestown and East Ruimveldt. However, Friday was the first time that three private day care centres were included in the activity, Bollers said.
According to her, the involvement in the 40th Mashramani celebration forms part of the municipality’s efforts to introduce the early childhood development programme by making the children aware of cultural diversity and the importance of celebration.
