The Enmore Community Centre Ground will certainly become a hive of activity today as Guyana’s leading junior track and field stars take centre field at the Inter-Guiana Games Trials, which is expected to commence at 10:00am.
Whether its junior sprint queens, Ashley Tasher, Iana Graham or national schools’ jumps champion, Winston Caesar or super twins Shequan and Shemaine Daniels, the event will certainly bring out the best in the junior athletes.
Earlier this week, President of the Athletics Association of Guyana, Colin Boyce had said that having the full participation of all the Districts across the country was his aim. If that is accomplished, the event will certainly be competitive.
Up to press time yesterday, the Association was still receiving confirmations on all those Districts expected to compete. Boyce maintained that every athlete should be given a fair chance at making the final composition of the team.
With 26 places up for grabs, strong performances are expected from those athletes earlier mentioned as well as some others that certainly include CARIFTA Games gold medallist, Jevina Straker, who is also the ‘Junior Sportswoman of the Year’.
Straker continues to be in good form and should run unrivalled today. Her opposition will likely come from Rupununi, which this newspaper understands is intent on making a very impact on the trials with a strong contingent.
Chavez Sital will also put his name in the bag for contention in the distance events but his major concern will be the super talented Carlon Halley from Corentyne, who competes in everything from 800m upwards with great success. Halley is likely to participate today in the middle and long distance events, which will be a gruelling contest as Daniel Felix from the Rupununi will be keen to catch the selectors’ eyes also. These three distance stars are definite candidates.
In the sprint events, Nisa Alleyne will attempt to repeat her dominance last year with in a less competitive field. Her confident level is supposed to be high ahead of this meet as an outstanding protégé of Nadine Rodrigues and Mercedes Forde.
Alleyne’s rise to the top of female junior sprinting has been nothing short of phenomenal, which was capped when she nearly pulled off a stunning sweep at the 2008 schools event only losing the 100m to the late Roxanna Rigby.
She faces a breed of rising junior stars which include Tiffany Carto, Deja Smart, Graham, Tasher and the Daniels among lots of other from around the country in events that will be done using the Heats and Finals format depending on the entries.
Chavez Ageday is also likely to become a sure pick but his version of the sprints will not be as clear cut as the females. Cortez Fraser will challenge with Linden also tossing their representatives in the bag for the IGG national selection.
Today the brood of juniors and future of local track and field will storm the community in an attempt to dawn the green and yellow in French Guiana from March 26-28. It will be a definite showdown on one of the fastest tracks in Guyana.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
