Pele snatched the Mayor’s 75th Birth Anniversary 7-a-side Knockout Football title at the Tucville ground on Friday evening after they defeated Alpha United 4-1 in the final.
Pele brushed aside the challenge of Alpha with ease as they fired on all cylinders. Skipper Travis Grant, Konata Manning, Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson and Mervin Joseph were on target as the boys in blue and gold made no mistake. Elton Browne made the lone response for Alpha.
Crane defeated Riddim Squad 1-0 to clinch the third prize, Junior Bobb finding the back of the net for Crane.
In the semi-finals, Pele got past Crane 3-1 with Grant, Joseph and Sheldon Holder ensuring they progressed, while Junior Bobb scored the consolation. Alpha squeezed past Riddim Squad 1-0 on penalty kicks after the contest finished regulation and extra time 0-0. After a series of misses by both teams, Alpha scored and goalkeeper Ronson Williams made a good save to deny Riddim Squad.
For their win Pele collected the $300,000 first prize and the Macorp trophy, while Alpha United received the $100,000 second prize, third prize went to Crane who got $60,000 and fourth placed Riddim Squad $40,000.
The exhibition tournament resulted in a win for Leopold Street who took away $25,000.
Mayor Green along with Coordinator Lennox Arthur extended gratitude to the business entities and individuals who have assisted them and ensured a successful staging of the tournament. Among those mentioned are Macorp, Banks DIH, Guyana Beverage Company (Busta), Humphrey’s Bakery, Nigel’s Supermarket, Winston Rambarran, Car Care, Johil and Mines Services Limited.
