Magistrate Judy Latchmin yesterday granted bail to the tune of $100,000 to a 58-year-old old female special constable who was charged with stealing a service revolver.
The accused, June Clement, of Prince William Street made her appearance at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
On Wednesday February 12, at Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara, she allegedly stole one .38 revolver and six matching rounds all property of the Guyana Police Force. The weapon and rounds, the court was told carry a value of $125,739.
The fact of the matter stated that at the time the woman was entrusted with the weapon as she was employed with the Guyana Police Force.
The charge was indictable and Clement was not required to plead.
She was represented by attorney-at-law Patrice Henry, who, in making a bail application, told the court that his client has been employed by the Guyana Police Force for the past 11 years, with an unblemished record.
Henry further pointed out to the court that his client, based on her years of long service and performance she was assigned to perform guard duty at the home of one of the Government’s Minister and it was at that location the weapon went missing.
He added that his client is a mother of five, with a fixed place of abode and if granted bail she would not be a flight risk to the court. He told the court that his client never had any run in with the law.
Meanwhile, the police did not oppose bail.
Clement is expected to make her next court appearance on March 29.
This newspaper was told that the accused on Wednesday last went to use the washroom while performing guard duty at the residence of Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh.
However, when she left the washroom she forgot the weapon and resumed her guard duties.
A few minutes later when her supervisor made a check of the location, the guard realised that she did not have her weapon. But upon checking the washroom she only found the holster.
According to the guard, no one had entered the compound and the only persons there were the Minister’s driver, his bodyguard and the gardener.
