Police have detained a female Special Constabulary rank whose weapon mysteriously disappeared on Wednesday last while she was on guard duty at the home of Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh.
The weapon, a .38 revolver with six live rounds, vanished following a visit the rank made to the washroom in the compound of the minister’s residence at Ogle on the East Coast of Demerara. The rank told investigators that she went to the washroom and had taken off the holster with the weapon while she went about her private business.
However, when she left the washroom she forgot the weapon and resumed her guard duties.
A few minutes later when her supervisor made a check of the location, the guard realised that she did not have her weapon. But upon checking the washroom she only found the holster.
According to the guard no one had entered the compound and the only persons there were the minister’s driver, his bodyguard and the gardener.
Sources close to the investigations have told this newspaper that the guard was negligent in the security of the firearm.
But despite this, none of the persons who were in the yard at the time are being treated as suspects in the theft of the weapon.
