The Guyana/Haiti relief efforts stand at $264M in cash at the banks and more than $59.5M in kind.
Yesterday, the Committee received donations from Zakir Khan, Chairman of the Wakenaam Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and Sheik Ahmad, member of Wakenaam NDC- $621,560 and also donated was13 bags of clothing and footwear.
This was achieved at a concert held in Wakenaam to raise funds to assist Haiti and residents also contributed greatly.
The Management and Staff of the Guyana National Shipping Corporation (GNSC) $300,000 and Burns Memorial Presbyterian church gave $100,000. Minister Manickchand was grateful for the response of the citizens and organisations and she noted that the committee will continue to assist Haiti to the best of its ability.
Earlier, Colonel Chabilall Ramsarup, head of the Civil Defence Commission, said some of the monies have been used to purchase commodities such as rice and flour and to pay shipping costs.He however said that the decision on the release of the monies to the Haitians will depend on Cabinet.
Meanwhile, Minister Priya Manickchand commended persons who have and are still continuing to donate cash and clothing. She advised then that they should continue to do so.
