Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday denied pretrial liberty to a 20-year-old man who is accused of having carnal knowledge of two girls, aged 3 and 8, between January 6 and 7, last.
The accused, Ronald Evans, of Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara, who was not required to plead to the indictable charge, was unrepresented.
After a lengthy discussion, the magistrate remanded Evans to prison. He is expected to make another appearance on March 2.
Also appearing before the Acting Chief Magistrate was Sherwin Abrams of Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt. It is alleged that Abrams stole one gold bangle valued $40,000 property of Omattie Jaikaran. He pleaded not guilty.
According to his lawyer, Abrams is bartender at a city night spot. The lawyer told the magistrate that his client is the father of two. He said that Abrams was in police custody for over one week, which is a breach of his client’s constitutional rights.
There was no objection to bail by Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford. Bail was granted in the sum of $20,000. Abrams is scheduled to make his next court appearance on March 16.
