Da Silva impresses on debut
By Edison Jefford
Bartica’s Andrew Wong rode unbeaten in five professional races Sunday at the Joe Vieira Park to take an unrivalled challenge to pro debutant, Junior Da Silva and Andy Rajkarran, who eventually dropped out of the competition.
Wong rode his Honda four-stroke 250cc bike to supremacy in five professional races and a combined pro and novice race that ended the first INXS Performance ‘Hot Track, Grass Track’ race meeting at the West Demerara venue.
The pre-race hype had been much about Rajkarran’s dominance but Wong made his point clear at the unorthodox venue. Rajkarran’s engine seized after two races forcing him back into his camp as a spectator for the remainder of the event.
The battle came down to Wong and Da Silva with the latter placing second to Wong in an awesome display of gutsy Dirt Bike racing. Da Silva was always at a disadvantage with a CR 125 cc, which is much slower than the 250cc.
His camp called for a level playfield in the professional races but the absence of rules was in Wong’s favour. The Bartician had superior speed and weight on the straight that outdid Da Silva with ease on the rough and inconsistent terrain.
Bobby Rasul rode to creditable third place finishes in the pro races. Da Silva had amused in one Novice race Sunday when he started at the back of the pack to finish second after a skilful display of technique and immense control.
His absence in the Novice races opened the flood gate for younger brother, Jerry Da Silva in the group but it was not a walk in the park since Raj Rajkarran and Vikash Ramcoomar share the spoils on top the podium in the amateur races.
Rajkarran had a solitary win while Ramcoomar won twice with Da Silva claiming second once with two thirds according to the results sheet. Wong clinched the featured 25-laps at the venue with Da Silva second and Gordon Da Silva third.
The day was filled with thrilling Grass Track action as hundreds thronged the road that is slightly elevated, giving the ground a pond-like feature, to get a glimpse of the best riders in Guyana in action on the INXS Performance contest.
The event was the first in a series of similar competitions on the INXS list. Stag Beer, Digicel, Akbar Auto Sales, Two Brothers Service Station, Pepsi, Jiffy Lubes, NP Fried Chicken and Jai Sawmill were the official sponsors.
