– Ramsammy
Health Minister, Leslie Ramsammy, is strongly denying claims that the Linden Hospital main operating theater is non-functional. Sources at the Linden Hospital had told Kaieteur News that the operating theater was not functioning and that patients who had to do simple surgeries had to be transferred to the Georgetown Hospital.
But yesterday, the Health Minister, in an invited comment said that he had visited the hospital some two weeks ago and everything was functioning well.
About a month ago, the Minister had told Kaieteur News that the equipment were being transferred to the new building. He had also said that the equipment would take two weeks to be sterilised.
Ramsammy told Kaieteur News that the operating theater may not be functioning to the liking of the general public but it is working.
He said that the problem has been caused mainly because of the lack of specialists at the hospital.
The Minister explained that complex surgeries are transferred to the Georgetown Hospital and less complex surgeries are done at the Linden institution.
Ramsammy admitted that in some instances, patients are referred for “simple cases” that could be dealt with at the Linden Hospital Complex.
The Minister said that some cases which are complex must be transferred to the GPHC because it is the major hospital. However, he says that hospital officials must remember that simple cases must be dealt with at the regional hospital. When simple cases are referred to the Georgetown Hospital, it places a significant burden on that facility, he said.
“It is impossible for us to have a national hospital in all the regions” the Minister noted.
He further noted that he has been getting reports about the same thing happening at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
He said that like Linden, the surgeries could be done there but the hospital officials nevertheless referred the patients to GPHC.
The Minister said that presently, officials are implementing a system where all referrals to Georgetown Public Hospital would be reviewed.
“We are getting this problem and this system would help us to determine if the referral was appropriate,” the Minister stated. He also noted that hospitals in the various regions have to be strengthened. The system which would be implemented is expected to determine if the patient’s treatment is being delayed. The Minister said that they are also working side by side with different hospital officials to make sure that persons follow the guidelines.
