– More than 4,000 families to benefit
Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), one of Guyana’s leading beverage companies, has joined the efforts to insure that the people in Haiti get clean drinking water.
Yesterday, the entity informed that it is sending $8M worth of its premium brand Diamond Mineral Water to assist some of the thousands affected by the devastating January 12 earthquake which claimed the lives of approximately 170,000 people.
A total of 20,000 gallons of water will be shipped in 5-gallon containers. The bottles can then be reused by Haitians who benefit from this initiative. A total of five 20-ft containers have been sent.
General Manger of DDL, Loris Nathoo, said that, “DDL was deeply moved by the events which unfolded in Haiti and as such, we felt compelled to render assistance in an effort to bring relief to victims of the earthquake.”
On January 16, Population Services International (PSI) had indicated that a desperate need for potable water exists in and around Port-au-Prince, prompting them to launch an appeal for increased support from the international community.
Demerara Distillers Limited expressed that it hopes that its efforts bring much needed relief to thousands of families affected by the earthquake.
