Boxers of the Harpy Eagle’s Boxing Gym who have been displaced for close to two weeks would soon have the use of a spanking new gym following intensified efforts by the contractors to expedite the process.
Renovation works started some two weeks ago after Vice President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Maurice Rajkumar agreed to donate the necessary cash for the total revamp of the facility.
The Vice President had agreed to commence renovation works that, in the end, would provide the boxers of that institution with improved training facilities and a cleaner environment in which to perfect their skill.
Initially, the contractors had earmarked some $300,000 towards the completion of the project but after the commencement of the actual work they determined that the cost would increase substantially.
Mr. Rajkumar gracefully acquiesced to the additional sum and so far the project is progressing fairly well.
When Kaieteur Sport visited the facility during last week, the contractors had already completed a substantial amount of work. The septic tank was already dug and they were in the process of putting the finishing touches to the toilet and bath. Work was also being done in the gym where the training area was being renovated.
This newspaper was told that the works on the lighting system as well as boxing ring will commence soon.
We were also assured that the entire project would be completed within a month.
This is just a part of the pilot project undertaken by the newly elected members of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) towards the development of the sport.
A programmes committee has been installed to put the necessary ramifications in place to ensure that the association’s programmes get off to a start soon.
Parliamentary Secretary and former journalist, Steve Ninvalle was unanimously elected to head the association following the resignation of Mr. Affeeze Khan.
