Caught! This man could not give a proper explanation for being in a Saffon Street business place shortly before midnight on Thursday.
A man who claimed that he just slept in the building but could not say by what means he entered, will have a lot of explaining to do before a city Magistrate.
The suspect was nabbed in the Traders Depot on Thursday night when neighbours alerted the owner that persons were entering the Saffon Street, Charlestown premises.
The establishment, which has been closed for more than a year, still houses a number of expensive equipment in the bottom flat. The upper portion is unoccupied.
From time to time the proprietors have suffered losses when thieves, using the roof, would access the interior of the building and cart of hundreds of thousands of dollars in booty.
The most recent theft occurred last Tuesday night.
But on Thursday night, neighbours were alerted by the sound of persons entering the building and immediately contacted the owners. The police were also contacted and they responded promptly.
Suspecting that the thieves were still in the building, the police surrounded it, and using an axe and flash lights, they forced their way inside.
After looking around for a while, they stumbled upon the thief who had tried to secrete himself in the ceiling of the upper flat.
When questioned, the man said that he merely sleeps in the building at nights and he had no intention to steal anything.
“Why not sleep in the yard?” someone asked him.
He replied, “I does protect the property, man.”
But the owners knew that was a lie.
The man said that he had been sleeping in the building for the past two months.
“So how come you didn’t know that the place get break Tuesday night?” was the next question.
Of course he could not answer and was promptly marched off to the lock-ups by the police.
