Yesterday, the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Company, in collaboration with the Guyana Technical Institute (GTI), officially launched its Tuition Refund Programme – complete with the handing over of US$13,000 (G$2.6M) worth of state-of-the-art electronic equipment to students pursuing a Diploma in Telecommunication Studies at GTI.
The equipment comprises 16 Global Specialties PB-505 Advanced Circuit Design Trainers, one (1) Global Specialties Dual Output regulated power supply, one (1) BK Precision, Model 2522b 20 MHz digital oscilloscope and two (2) BK Precision, Model 2120B 30MHz dual trace oscilloscopes.
According to GT&T Senior Manager HR/IR Security, Parsaram Ramnarain, while the company has recognized that technicians may possess the knowledge and skills to do the job, there is need to constantly upgrade these previously acquired competencies in order to keep them abreast with the changes in technology; thus enabling them to function effectively in today’s dynamic telecommunication environment.
Consequently, he noted, the company forged a strategic partnership with the GTI in 2007 to formulate and execute a suitable training programme to effectively meet the needs of the company and its customers – present and future since.
It was also highlighted that the GT&T “desired an intervention which while achieving the accepted national and regional academic standards be customized to our specific needs as these relate to the ICT sector”.
GT&T’s Technical Directors and Managers met with staff members of GTI to determine the desired knowledge and skills requirements, such that the course content and the most effective training techniques could be ascertained.
The course is for a two-year duration on a part time basis, with classes being held once weekly, on Saturdays.
The Tuition Refund Programme has a current enrollment of thirty (30) students comprising Technicians I&II and Engineers I&II who were selected based on their success at an entrance test conducted by the GTI.
It was indicated that the objectives of the programme are: to provide a means whereby technicians with an interest and commitment to the field of telecommunication can upgrade their previously acquired skills; to encourage further development of analytical, problem solving and experimental abilities and to equip technicians with fundamental knowledge for the world of work in the telecommunication field.
GT&T’s Chief Executive Officer, Major General (Retired) Joe Singh, stated that not only are the students benefiting from the diploma programme, but the necessary equipment has now been provided to assist with their enhanced development and that of the country, while it was noted that the company had no problem in identifying the persons they wanted to do the programme since they are GT&T technicians.
He explained that the programme is designed to integrate higher telecommunications into society while ensuring that the syllabus they are undertaking was relevant to the world of work.
The CEO stressed that technicians from GT&T should inspire the GTI students to walk in the right direction, while charging those that were doing the programme to be professional in all they do, and not to turn their backs on Guyana and the institution.
According to Principal of GTI, Mr. Chinedu Onwuzirike, one of the donated pieces of equipment is capable of replacing four of the previous apparatus and with the relevant training material, the course will improve tremendously.
He said the GTI syllabus will reflect the Competency Based Education Training (CBET) which is a first for Guyana.
The Tuition Refund Programme commenced on September 26, 2009. (Rabindra Rooplall)
