Two-day Retreat set for this weekend
By Franklin Wilson
Stakeholders of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) will be locked in two days of intense planning and strategizing this weekend when the entity for the first time hosts a 2-day retreat to chart the way forward.
According to Secretary Dr. Karen Pilgrim, GASA is cognizant of the fact that for the entity to remain on top of its game, they have to put systems and policies in place that will lend to good practices to enhance and make the GASA viable. To this end, the National body has organised the retreat which will be held at the Allied Arts Unit of the Ministry of Education, Queens College Compound, tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday.
Stakeholders attending will be fine tuning the By Laws of the organization as well as their proposed 5-Year Strategic Plan. Both documents have been out for some time but the Association is now making moves to finalise and adopt the documents. Among the areas being dealt with in the By Laws are the specific duties of the executive members; code of ethics and conduct for athletes, coaches, administrators; qualifying standards for international competitions; rules for establishment of records and formalising of the entities financial regulations.
Dr. Pilgrim noted that in responding to the need to provide a comprehensive response to the problem of stagnation of the growth of competitive swimming in Guyana, GASA has designed a strategic plan setting out its programme of intervention for the advancement of the sport. The process involves the following:
1. Review of the status of swimming in Guyana and the issues affecting the sport. 2. Examination of the strengths and weaknesses of the Swimming Association to determine its ability to respond. 3. Determination of the opportunities and threats the Association must deal with. 4. Setting of targets for the Association over the next five years.
The retreat is aiming to get the final input of all stakeholders in concretising the Strategic Plan (2010 – 2015).
The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association was established in 1960 as the representative body of swimming in Guyana. The Association represents over 300 swimmers in four affiliated clubs and individuals. The affiliated clubs are Dolphin, Dorado, Orca and Silver Sharks. Individuals are also involved from Linden and Bartica.
Members of the public who are interested in being a part of the retreat are invited to attend.
