National Flyweight boxer Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers, fighting out of Berbice, says that he will make overseas based fighter Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry pay for what happened the last time. He was talking about tonight’s clash in the Holland Entertainment Productions card at the Sports Hall.
“I am out for revenge, the last time the referee unceremoniously stopped the fight, when I was leading and that really upset me.” “I was all over this guy, I was over confident and he caught me with a few lucky blows and for some strange reason the referee stopped the fight”. “After dodging me since 2004 I had the opportunity to destroy him in 2008, but those things happen.” “He is no bully he is lucky.”
“Let’s hope that he is here to fight and there will not be any excuse when it is done.” Those were the words of the ‘Pocket Rocket’ when Kaieteur News caught up with him in New Amsterdam where he is based and is presently working out at the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym under the watchful eyes of former national boxing champion Jeff Roberts.
The two will meet in a Bantamweight clash.
Rogers will have to move up in weight like he did the last time for his much anticipated return bout with Dharry, but said that will not be a problem, as he plans to take care of the ‘Collie Bully’ anyway.
Rogers who has a record of 10-4, said what happened in the fight with Dharry was similar to what happen in the fight with Dexter Marques, telling Kaieteur Sports. “…the whole world saw I was beating Dexter Marques like snake and suddenly the referee decided to stop that fight.”
He plans to use this as a stepping stone for a Commonwealth shot. After winning that title he says he plans to retire and go into full time coaching at his Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym in Berbice.
Rogers, who has been hard at training has acquired the services of former national boxing champion, overseas-based Jeff Roberts who hails from Berbice.
When he last fought he was guided by former Guyana light heavyweight champion Al Thomas.
At the moment the rocket said the he works out in the morning, where he does some road work, skipping, shadow boxing and some other exercises.
In the afternoons it’s down to some serious Gym work on the heavy and speed bags. After that it sparring time, where he receives gloves work under the watchful eyes of Roberts.
He said he is really pleased with the shape and condition Roberts has whipped him into and plans to reward the former champion with a convincing victory. Rogers who once fought out of the Bauxite Bombers, Gordon’s Boxing Gym and the Guyana Defence force when he was an amateur, said his best moment was when he won the Caribbean championship in 2001.
Rogers says he will carry the weight of Berbice on his back and will be the pride of the ancient county and plans to make his adopted home town proud.
He is grateful to the promoters, for giving him another chance to prove his class, and his fans and supporters.
