Whip East Coast Demerara by 64 runs
Another brilliant all-round display by the talented West Indies female cricketer Shemaine Campbell led the Rose Hall Town Metro (RHTM) to an easy 64 run victory over East Coast Demerara in the final of the Guyana Cricket Board National female 40 overs tournament which was played at the Albion Community Centre ground.
Campbell crafted a solid 69 and then returned with the ball to take 3 important wickets as the female team of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club took the National Championship in style.
Rose Hall Town Metro were invited to bat after losing the toss and were given a 44 run opening partnership by Campbell and Melanie Henry before Henry was caught at backward point of medium pacer Haseena Mohamed.
National Under-19 player Jacqueline Singh joined forces with Campbell who was playing shots all around the wicket. Singh did not last long as she feel for 3 after adding 12 with Campbell with the score at 56-2 in the 14th over.
West Indies all-rounder Tremayne Smartt 8 and Tessa Park 5 were the next two batters to be dismissed as East Coast fought back to reduce RHT Metro to 97-4 by the 26th over.
Campbell reached her half century off 67 balls and together with fellow West Indies player Erva Giddings posted a crucial 5th wicket stand of 33 before Giddings was bowled by pacer Shinnied Emerson for an aggressive 18.
Campbell was then bowled by Emerson for a well played 69 which came off 84 deliveries and was decorated with 6 delightful boundaries. RHT Metro were eventually bowled out for 149 off 35 of their allotted 40 overs.
Emerson was the leading bowler for East Coast with 3-34 and received good support from legspinner Devanie Sewnarine and Kavita Yadram with 2 wickets apiece.
Needing 150 off 40 overs to win the game and competition, East Coast were rocked back in the first over by left arm pacer Erva Giddings when she knocked back the off stump of Devanie Sewnarine for 3 to leave the visitors at 4-1.
Fellow West Indies pacer Tremayne Smartt then bowled national player Darlene Gale for 3 at 15-2 in over number 2. Opener Nayesha Khan and Kavita Yadram then struggled to get the ball away and added 15 runs for the 3rd wicket in 7 overs before Yadram was bowled by Giddings for 9 at 30-3.
The East Coast batters could not handle the RHT Metro bowling attack and were eventually dismissed for a meager 85 off 30 overs. Opener Nayesha Kahn 12 (37 balls) and the talented Haseena Mohamed 15 (38 balls), were the players reaching double figures.
Campbell took 3-6 from 6 probing overs with 3 maidens with excellent support from Giddings who had 2-20 from her 6 overs, impressive left arm spinner Nikita Toney 2-18 from 8 overs, Smartt 2-22 (6 overs) and 12 year-old offspinner P. Millington 1-6.
Chairman (Ag) of the Guyana Cricket Board Competitions Committee and Coordinator for female cricket in Guyana, Colin Europe at the presentation ceremony reported that the tournament was a success, stating that several new and existing talents were unearthed.
Europe congratulated Rose Hall Town Metro for being crowned champions acknowledging that the better team won. He also stated that he would encourage the Guyana Cricket Board to make the tournament annual.
President of the Berbice Cricket Board Keith Foster praised both teams for the discipline displayed during the final while stating that he was impressed with the talent of the players. However, Foster expressed his disappointment that the Guyana Cricket Board did not see it fit to offer any financial incentives for the final as way of encouraging female cricket similar to what transpires at the male level. He said it is his wish that the situation would be corrected at the next female tournament.
The winner and runner up teams received trophies while Campbell was named player of the final by the coaches of the two teams. She also received a trophy.
Secretary/CEO of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club Hilbert Foster hailed the success of the Rose Hall Town Metro team which was only formed in 2008 and has already produced three West Indies players.
He dedicated the Championship to the memory of the late Marketing Manager of Metro Mr. Roy Darson and the Management and Staff of Metro Office and Computer Supplies, the official sponsor of the team.
