As compared to a year or two ago when gunmen ran amuck on villages and law enforcement officials in ‘C’ division and more specifically on East Coast Demerara, crime is now steadily decreasing.
According to ‘C’ Division Commander, Balram Persaud, ranks now conduct searches in villages without much concern for safety and rebellion.
He recalled that just after the jailbreak, when five notorious prisoners escaped from the Camp Street jail, many villages especially Buxton was held hostage by these criminal elements.
Persaud said that police ranks in his district must be credited with riding the village of these colourful characters.
He said that Buxton is now one of the most stable villages on the East Coast and other villages are now assuming the notorious role that once characterised that village.
Persaud said that now police are called upon to conduct regular raids in the villages of Melanie Damishana and Bare Root on the East Coast.
He said that notwithstanding that, the police have been able to ensure a great degree of security and peace in those areas.
Persaud said that persons who have intentions to gravitate to criminal acts are aware that police patrols are frequent in those areas so they are less likely to make such moves. He said that he did not want to create the impression that crime does not exist in that division, but the crime is nothing in comparison to what obtained in the past.
Persaud said the effectiveness of the police in the district is evident with the arrest of a suspect in Bare Root who was wanted for the murder of a Melanie Damishana resident.
Additionally, the Commander said that ‘C’ Division has one of the highest clear up rate (85%) for murder, not only in Guyana but the world over.
This, he said, can be attributed to the hard work and relentless dedication of the majority of ranks in that district.
However, he acknowledged that there are questionable ranks that are still apart of the force but excesses by these individuals will not be tolerated and will be met with the sternest possible disciplinary measure.
