Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on Monday granted a greens vendor $70,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny.
Between January 12 and January 13, Trevor Fredericks, 32, of 52 E North Sophia reportedly broke into the dwelling house of Naptula Baptiste and stole a quantity of food stuff, clothing, jewelry, a pressure cooker and four pairs of shoes.
Fredericks’s lawyer Paul Fung-a-fat stated that his client lived with Baptiste for seven years and the union produced four children.
Fung-a-fat said that Baptiste became a bit dissatisfied with his client and went off with the little children. He said that she later reported to the police that Fredricks broke into her house.
The lawyer said that the police investigating the matter declared that the house was not broken into and as such Fredericks should have been charged with larceny from a dwelling house. He added that his client had a key to the house, which he handed over to the police.
He told the court that Baptiste had left the five-year-old child, all alone which caused his client to go to the house.
Baptiste, who was present in court, proclaimed that the house in question has no electricity and as a result she is forced to take the kids to sleep at her grandmother at nights.
She said her mother sent barrels for her and when she returned to the house she noticed half of one of the barrels missing.
She added that four days prior to the incident Fredericks had moved out of the house and had taken her daughter with him.
“He told me that he going to collect the child and I not going to see her again” Baptiste said. She said that she reported the matter and when the police contacted his relatives where he was staying he denied knowing anything about the child’s whereabouts.
Baptiste told the court that she received a call the following Sunday from Fredericks stating that he was going to drop the girl at school and if she (Baptiste) wished she could collect her from there.
Police prosecutor Stephen Telford intervened and stated that he could only address the court on the matter at hand, which was the charge of break and enter and larceny, and not the matter relating to the child.
He added that on January 12, Baptiste secured her home and returned to discover a window broken. Upon checking she noticed the items in question missing. He said that police investigating the matter later arrested the accused who admitted to committing the offence. Telford said that some of the items were recovered.
Fredericks is expected to return to court on February 25.
