A fine half century by Amant Kowshaldeo guided North Essequibo to a five wicket victory over South Essequibo in the final of the Dr. Kamani sponsored knockout twenty/20 cricket competition played recently at Queenstown on the Essequibo Coast.
In a game which was reduced to 15 overs , South batted first and made 102-7 off their allotted overs. Andy Dass topscored with 40 and Amir Mohamed assisted with 16 as Mahindra Harrychand took 3-9.
North in reply reached their winning target in 12.3 overs ending on 106-5. Kowshaldeo an Essequibo U-15 player led with an attractive 65 while Juma Lall contributed 23. Raj Parbattie and Navindra Sarabjeet grabbed two wickets each for South who drew the bye to the final.
Meanwhile in the lone semi-final played at the same venue. North defeated Central Essequibo by 33 runs.
North took first strike and scored 92-4 after excessive preparation moisture in the pitch caused the overs to be reduced to 15.
Mahindra Harrychand and Tameshwar Dhanpaul were their leading run getters with 33 each. Amant Boodnee picked up 2-10 for Central who were bundled out for 59 in 14.2 overs. Parmesh Parashutan and Herry Green (19) were the only batsmen that offered resistance against Dexter Williams 3-9, Kowshaldeo 2-7 and Tameshwar Dhanpaul 2-12.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony on behalf of the sponsor, Vincent Collins said Dr. Kamani was pleased to be associated with the development on cricket on the Essequibo Coast and stressed the need for more cricket to be played in the Cinderella county especially at the Junior levels.
