Dear Editor,
The world Military Basketball Championship was held in Suriname September of 1984.
Countries that participated were host Suriname, South Korea, Guyana, Senegal, the United Arab Emirates, the United States of America, China, Brazil, Algeria and winners Italy.
In first round matches Guyana lost to the United Arab Emirates 95 to 68, Italy 131 to 67 and 96 to 59 vs South Korea.
In second round matches, Guyana humbled the United Arab Emirates 90 to 82, destroyed Algeria 88 to 76. Senegal halted the Land of Many Waters quest for a third consecutive victory with a 96 to 70 triumph. Guyana then surrendered to the powerful Brazilians in their final encounter.
Manager of the Guyana team former three times Central American Championship player and National Captain, Major Ronald Pickering, singled out Cadet Officer Hewley Harry the only Guyanese player that was selected in the combined team that engaged champions (Italy) in the All Stars game.
Harry selection was based on his percentage of rebounds. He had the highest tally for the overall championship.
Private (centre) Eon Andrews had the best aggregate for Guyanese 121 points to fill the eleventh berth among players in the overall Championship.
Saudi Arabia’s Assad Takroni headed the individual points scoring table, Senegalese Maguete Ndoye clinched second position with 221 points. It’s interesting to know if this championship was sanctioned by FIBA, but according to several of the Guyanese players that participated, the standard of play was higher than the Caricom Championship Level.
