-proper security needed
Yesterday, burglars in the wee hours of the morning invaded stall number 52B in Hydronie Market on the East Bank Essequibo and carted off $500,000 in goods and valuables.
Devo Bissessar of Lot 2 Parika, said that the market needs a security upgrade since the guards are corrupt and not performing their duties that they are being paid for by the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC).
He explained he learnt of the breakage after the market security visited his home early in the morning to tell him what had transpired, since he lives in the area.
After he proceeded to his stall he noted that the blocks from the back of the stall were removed. When he opened the door he saw that all the blocks had fallen into the zinc sink which would have caused lots of noise and alerted the guards. However upon inspection the burglars had a feast before escaping with a large amount of grocery bizarrely without alerting the guards.
Bissessar produced a receipt showing that he pays $14,000 a month rent to the NDC. He said that on the four market days illegal vending is done inside and outside of the market, which stifles the legitimate stall owners.
“People choose to sell their stall and started to vend around the market and the NDC and security allow it,” he said.
He added that lots of information is hidden from the Regional Chairman and the end result is chaos.
According to sources the guards are in custody pending investigation.
The Regional Chairman, Julius Faerber, when contacted asked that the call be made later. He did not respond on the second occasion.
