– GLTA Executive pays visit
One month ago, tennis player, proprietor of Venu Shopping Centre and AVON Distributor in Corriverton Vishnu Doerga made a phone call to the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) to ask its assistance to help organise and develop interest in the sport in Berbice.
Well, amidst great weather last Sunday, the prospect of organizing a new recreational activity was realised when the GLTA headed by members of its Executive including President Christopher Ram paid a visit to the Region to help the Corriverton Tennis Club launch its operations.
The GLTA members was accompanied by a team of junior and senior players who were selected from Georgetown and New Amsterdam and they engaged in exhibition matches which was highlighted with the clash between top male players Phillip Squires and Ezra Sue-Ho, who both put on a great show of their tennis prowess for a few spectators.
Ram thanked Guysuco for allowing access to the facility and expressed his delight at the great contribution towards one of the key objectives of the GLTA for 2010 which is to re-establish tennis clubs in quantity and quality.
He then handed over a quantity of 36 mini-tennis and intermediate racquets and 50 balls geared for young beginners of 10 years and under.
The Club will use the mini-racquets and soft balls to start the mini-tennis programme in the primary schools in the area.
Wimbledon Tennis club also received equipment for the reestablishment of their school programme.
Meanwhile, coaches of New Amsterdam, Carol Humphrey and Godfrey Lowden, both expressed joy at such a positive gesture towards the development of tennis at a time when club participation seemed to be dwindling and they both recommitted themselves to the development of tennis in Berbice. Mr. Joseph Rayappen has taken on the Presidency of the Club and promises to fulfil his commitment to promote the sport in the community.
Doerga is the Secretary and they are looking for greater participation from the Corriverton community initially for recreational purposes as a health benefit, but also with the intention of the neighbourhood becoming a fierce competitor on the local tennis scene.
